Welcome back to the world of The Guardians of Ga'Hoole by Kathryn Lasky! Faolan is a wolf pup that was released by the pack into the wild because he had a splayed paw. He was supposed to die, for the weak are thrown aside in these wolf packs. But, instead, he lives through the night and gets taken in by a bear named Thunderheart. Faolan is raised as one of her own, making use of his splayed paw with strange markings by digging and such with it. As he grows stronger with each day, Thunderheart doesn't. She is getting older, and her death is near; from natural causes, or from an attack, she will not last much longer. Meanwhile, Faolan explores a mysterious cave during her hibernation and finds the same strange markings on his paws on their walls. What is so special about him? What do these marks mean? Will Thunderheart live to see another summer? Was Faolan destined to be born with his peculiar weakness? Will he fulfill his mysterious destiny?
I loved this book. It is the first in the 'Wolves of the Beyond' series. If you liked any of Erin Hunter's books, you will fall into the world of the wolves in this astonishing book.
