In this astounding book by Toby Forward, Sam is the current apprentice of the magician Flaxfield and studies happily with his dragon friend Starback and the many books within the magician's home. Halfway through his apprenticey though, disaster strikes. Flaxfield dies unexpectedly, leaving him masterless and confused. When Flaxfield's previous prodigies come to manage his affairs, they stumble across Sam and immediately become suspicious of him. Isn't it odd that he would die with an untrained apprentice in his home? When Sam learns of their plans for him, he takes his dragon and few belongings and runs away from everything he has ever known and loved about the valley and decides to start a new life elsewhere. What he doesn't know is that a great evil knows about the late Flaxfield and his powerful apprentice, and that it will stop at nothing to make sure that he cannot reach his full potential. Will Sam survive on his own?
I really liked this creative novel. Forward did a great job of balancing out olden tales and stories with our modern twist on fantasy writing. However liked The Magic Thief is sure to love this amazing book.
